Though dentures are a great way to fill in one’s smile, they are notorious for slipping and can make it difficult to speak and eat effectively. For this reason, many patients prefer dental implants. These sturdy, biocompatible, titanium posts can last a lifetime with proper care and are the tooth replacement option of choice by patients and dentists alike. If you’re thinking about making the transition from dentures to dental implants, read on to learn more about what you can expect as well as some helpful tips.

Before You Make the Switch

Since missing teeth mean that the jawbone is no longer being properly stimulated in those areas, this may cause it to erode. This can lead to additional tooth loss and may make it difficult to get dental implants. Your dentist will take X-rays to determine if your jawbone is dense enough. If it isn’t, they will likely recommend a bone graft. Additionally, if you have bad habits that may jeopardize your new smile like drinking excessively or using tobacco products, these will need to be ceased before you move forward with treatment.

After Treatment

Once your dental implants have been placed, it may take some time for you to get used to them. Though it takes four to six months for them to fuse with the jawbone through osseointegration, your new teeth should begin to feel normal within a week or two. For the first 10 to 14 days after your transition from dentures, don’t eat crunchy or hard foods since they can impede the healing process and cause discomfort. Dental implants have a 95% success rate and it’s unlikely that you’ll experience complications, but call your dentist if you notice any unusual pain, swelling, or redness.

3 Things to Expect During the transition From Dentures

Though there are some cases where your dentist can have your existing dentures modified to attach to dental implants, you’ll likely have to have new ones made if you want implant dentures. Regardless of which kind of implants you get, a few things you’ll notice as you adjust to your new smile include:

  • No slipping –Since dental implants fuse with the jawbone, this prevents slipping and makes it easier to eat, speak, smile, and laugh.
  • Permanence –Full dentures need to be replaced every five to 10 years, but dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth that can last a lifetime with proper brushing and flossing as well as regular dental visits.
  • Getting used to things –You may produce more saliva than usual for the first few weeks after your implants are placed since your body is getting used to them. This should go away once you’re done adjusting.

Though the transition from dentures to dental implants is significant, you’re sure to love the added convenience and stability. Reach out to your dentist to schedule a consultation so you can learn if dental implants are the right option for your smile!
